overview

✦ This is the second area of Aather that the heroes have lived in! For information on the first world, please click here. That part of the world is currently "locked" and only periodically accessible.

✦ Aather has normal Earth gravity, atmosphere, etc. Weather changes will be announced as they occur, but the default is about 30°C (85°F), with no clouds and a medium strong breeze, which is to say, this area is considerably warmer than the forest had been.

✦ Aather has a 24 hour day: 11 hours of dark and 11 hours of light. It takes an hour for the sun to rise, and an hour for the sun to set: at dusk and dawn, no matter where you are, there are monsters. At high noon and midnight, if you leave the sunflower fields or the hill, you may also encounter something nasty.

✦ At night there is a small sprinkling of stars over the sky (just a few) and the moon is always a thin crescent. On very clear nights, you can make out the aurora over the northern sky.

Dream posts can happen at any time of the day. Wind and Water magics (if you draw them from the outside forces) have been unlocked.

✦ Any of the grayed out area is a locked area. Locked areas have no color (just gray, black and white) and are slightly fuzzy. It may be difficult to make out what they are, even if your character is standing right next to them. Your character cannot enter a locked area: an invisible wall stops their progress.

✦ You cannot leave back along the path that leads towards the castle. There are a pair of wrought-iron gates blocking the pathway. On either side, you hit a wall of trees: it's not dark or gray, but you can't keep going.

✦ There is a crack in the cliff face with a broken-off giant rib spreader on the ground beside it. The crack appears to be a small oval mirror lined with red sea glass and black iron. Its surface is currently opaque. However, if you walk by it ... particularly at night ... you might catch the face of one of your companions taken by the dark looking back at you. There is also a cluster of bright red flowers growing under the mirror, delicate and beautiful — they're in the shape of forget-me-nots.

✦ There is a narrow, winding path all the way up to the top of the cliff, where you will find a grassy clearing in front of a solid wall of rock. Pressed up against the wall of rock, there is a circle of bricks, and between them, a circle of tightly-nailed planks that seem to be covering something. No matter how hard you press or pry or try to break them, they appear invincible. Similarly, if you try to climb or fly over the cliff behind it, you simply find that it's impossible. There are flowers around the circle. The area is populated by spindly, twisted black trees with no leaves, or buds. They are only a little taller than an average person, and thin, but impossible to cut down, or harm in any way—they feel like wood to the touch, but ring like metal when struck. Occasionally, a pair of tiny gleaming eyes will peer out from within the branches, and you can hear low, persistent hissing, and maybe catch sight of tiny, reptilian bodies scrambling back into the cracks in the cliffs.

✦ A bit of the cliffs form a diving platform over the sea.

✦ Past the sign, there is a proper little stone house/shrine thing. It has a roof and looks like it was once well used for something. The floor is marble (just like the walls and pillars and so forth). There's a large loom half-woven with rainbow cloth in this little hut as well as a large cauldron stained dark red on the inside.

✦ South of the sunflowers are green, terraced slopes. There is rich, damp soil here, with the occasional tiny green bud poking up from the grass.

✦ The Ring is a circle of limestone with a perimeter of gold. The gold is somewhat beat up and has mineral deposit on it and the limestone is mildly pocked. The Ring changes per personae whims, especially during games, but this is its default state.

✦ The hill isn't overly steep, but it's about twenty to thirty feet high, and large. The ground is fairly inhospitable, a mixture of faint gray scrub, dime-sized white pebbles, and soft sand.

✦ The paths between the cabins are covered in small dime-sized white pebbles. The area around the paths (with the flower print) is a field of very large sunflowers—essentially a forest of sunflowers so dense you cannot see through them. They are tall enough that you also can't see over them, though you could fly over them if your character is capable of that.

✦ The sand is beach sand! It's fine and pale yellow and no sea shells but large washed up driftwood. It rises and falls slightly with dunes, but is generally flat. Who knows what you'd find if you went exploring, though . . .

✦ Southwesterly from the sandy area there are about 30 feet of shallow water, ranging from a few inches deep to about 12 feet deep. It gets deeper as you go out, and if you go out far enough, you will encounter the giant coils of what might be a sea monster . . .

✦ The cliffs are about sixty to seventy feet up and have a flat top. They are very difficult to scale, but not impossible. There is nothing much up there, and you eventually hit the edges of this part of the world, but from the northernmost edge you can see down to the path that leads back towards the castle. You cannot see past that; it's simply blurry. The cliffs also have team-colored gemstones embedded in them, as well as small lines of gold and copper-- but not very much. There's a crescent curve to the cliffs with enough room to let a ship pass at the very edge.

✦ There are 14 small tiered cliffs jutting out of the mainbody of cliffs, facing the ocean. Each tier has a substantial amount of fertile soil as well as a small woody thing that might someday be a tree. These tiers are overrun with climbable vines.

✦ There is a small oasis in the desert—little more than a hole dug in the ground, with shallow water. It's lined with flowers of different types.

✦ There is a strip of sand between the sunflower fields and the ocean; this strip of sand leads to a shack that is on a raised ridge of stone jutting out of the ocean. It's a bit of a swim, but the view is nice and there's a fireplace.

✦ There seems to be something of a whirlpool quite close to shore—just a twisting vortex of water, about a couple metres wide.

✦ At night, there are small, softly glowing orbs floating around in the darkness; sometimes they take small patterns, streaming this way and that, caught an invisible breeze. They don't cast a lot of light by themselves, but in groups they cause strangely warping shadows, making even sunflowers seem ominous. They seem to cluster around things like doors and windows, or on anything that you touch—put something down after holding it, and the orbs will stick to it as if drawn to the body heat. Or something else—?

✦ There are constellations: Orion, Cassiopeia, Pegasus, Draco and Andromeda. None of them are in the "right" places.

✦ Past the sunflower fields, almost down to the beach, there is a strip of fertile land. This entire area is also overrun with flowers interspersed with tangled, high grass.

✦ There are also some additional changes made by characters as they interact with Aather.

team cabins

✦ The team cabins are technically no longer cabins, but instead buildings made of brick and clay that look a little like this, but single-story. The exact floorplan of the cabins is here.

✦ The roof of each cabin is tiled in the team's color. The floors are mostly stone, but have straw mats in strategic areas (though you can obviously pull them around as you like).

✦ The kitchen (bottom left) has a door that leads to the outside and one that leads to the main room, a table that seats seven near the front window, a stone stove, and a food prep counter with a cupboard below it. At the moment, though, it is otherwise completely empty.

✦ The main room has seven beds that are exactly the same as the beds in the original cabins. They have the same stains and rips and probably still smell like you. This room has a slightly wider area in the middle that has the main door, and beside that, an empty hearth in what could become a sitting room.

✦ The bathroom is a fabulous luxury. There is a large, rectangular wooden tub that looks like it could fit your whole team if you were really really cozy. There is a water pump, but it takes a bit of work, and the water is always cold. Near the back, there is another door to a private area that has a hand washbasin (no faucet) and toilet.

✦ The courtyard has a fire pit, a well, and a small stack of firewood. The floor of the courtyard is made of the same small white stones that make up the paths and the ground on the hill.

sterling

✦ Sterling is just at the edge between the sunflower fields and the sand, built into a large sand dune before it fades into smooth desert. It is a large, three-story stone building that looks plain and unassuming from the outside—maybe a little like a fortress. On the inside, it looks a little like this, with each separate door a separate room, all facing an empty central courtyard.

✦ Each room has a knight's name on a nameplate (or names, if you're into that). Knight rooms typically have one bed (queen sized); a bedside table with a wrought iron lamp, a heavy area rug, and a trunk at the end of the bed that provides you with whatever you want to wear. There are windows with heavy drapery, and the beds here are more comfortable than the forest caves, with silk sheets and down comforters. The doors lock with a hook and loop.

✦ The dining room, quest room, and laundry room are much the same as they have been. There are now two private bathrooms and one room that has an enormous tub with about six faucets. Think Harry Potter bathtub.

✦ In the center of the courtyard is a glass table with Beauty's Book on it. There is also an oil lamp on the table.

onyx

✦ Onyx Tower has not changed, library and all. We don't know how. We don't know why. We just accept it.

✦ The medical center is still in Onyx's shadow—it is made of stone and brick on the outside, but the inside looks exactly like it had in the forest.

the ring

✦ The Ring is a circle of limestone with a perimeter of gold. The gold is somewhat beat up and has mineral deposit on it and the limestone is mildly pocked. The Ring changes per personae whims, especially during games, but this is its default state.
the nail tree

The nail tree appears to be a blackened, ten-foot-high evergreen with thin, sharp nails instead of needles. If you pull one off, it doesn't seem to grow back, but no matter how many you pull away, there never seem to be any fewer. There is a small baby tree next to it with beautiful red cedar wood. The nail tree is no longer there, and the cedar sapling has grown to tower over the hill. Where the nail tree was is disturbed earth and glittering silver laurel leaves.

animals

Monsters & Running Monster Posts doc [Edible… sometimes]

Rockzile lizards and their eggs. [Edible]

✦ Black and silver striped eels in the ocean. Some are very small but some are several inches wide and several feet long. The larger ones give you a shock when you touch them. [Edible]

✦ Lantern owls at night! These are small four inch tall owls with transparent chests that have lights in them. They are extremely skittish and fly away as soon as anyone gets close, but they also provide enough light for you to see at night at least . . .

✦ Flat fish seabra. It tastes like chicken. [Edible]

✦ Sugar bugs occasionally smash straight into the cliffs, shattering into pieces with a loud musical chime. Then, there are half a dozen smaller glass bugs that repeat the same process, with varying tones, until they bust into so many pieces that they cascade to the ground, leaving a fine sheen of glittery dust that tastes a little like sugar. [Edible]

✦ Clams. They are small and blue. They are four inches to a foot under the sand, and they taste like clams. [Edible]

✦ Thirteen armed octopus creatures patrol the deeper waters. These range in size from a golfball to a dog and taste like octopus. [Edible]

✦ There are noisy birds over the ocean, but they're too far away to get a good look at.

✦ In the shallow water, there are shiny oysters that hop around and follow your voice. They jump out of your hands if you catch them, but if you somehow manage to hold them and pry them open, there are beads in various team colors.

✦ Tiny monkeys around the cliffs and sometimes sunflowers. From a distance, they appear to be small rats, and they're too fast to catch.
plants

✦ On the east wall of every house are woody (brown-green) vines that have small brussel sprout like buds on them. [Edible]

Meat nuts [Edible]

✦ Water Melons - they look like upside down apples bobbing in the ocean. They have thin roots that go down from the 'stem' into the sandy bottom. They are plentiful and taste a bit like honeydew. [Edible]

✦ Clumps of grass in the sand that have either little clusters of black peppercorns or little clusters of heart shaped salt crystals growing out of them. [Edible]

✦ Hard green vines on the beach that have small croissants on them. The croissants need to be lightly baked to be tasty and delicious. [Edible]

✦ A brightly-colored bush with silky, flat rainbow leaves partway up the cliffs. Each leaf tastes like something different! [Edible]

✦ Sea beans in the deeper oceans. These are green vines that have red kidney beans growing off of them. The beans are slightly salty but legume tasting and high in protein. The vines are also edible and taste like kelp. [Edible]

✦ Clusters of miniature grapefruit. There are very skinny thin green roots that dangle down from the fruit and touch into the soil. They float about three feet off the ground. The rinds are sweet though the flesh of the fruit itself is bitter. [Edible]

✦ Clusters of blue-headed typha glowing with a dull, phosphorescent light. If you pluck one, it will cast enough light to see you safely home. If you eat the roots, your night vision will improve considerably for the following few hours. [Edible]

✦ By the doorstep of each cabin, there are small sprouts, with round, brightly-colored seed pods. They taste a little like popcorn, and sound like drums when they're popped. [Edible]

✦ In small clumps near the pathway over the hill and through the desert, there are little cacti that all look identical—but 50% have soft, pettable fuzz and are full of jam-like goo, and the other 50% have that awful spiny fuzz that leaves invisible needles all over your hands that sting and itch like crazy, and are full of bitter goo. [sometimes Edible]

✦ On the terraces, there are vines sturdy enough to climb that have grape-like clusters of orange fruits that resemble kumquats and taste like oranges. The skin is edible, but bitter. There is also other fruit. [Edible]

unlocks

✦ There are little white puffs like dandelion puffs that melt away when approached— but they aren't cold . . . how weird.

✦ There are small curls sticking up out of the ground. They're slightly fuzzy and white/eggshell in color.

chronology

✦ There is a chronological list of what unlocks happened when here.
